Ojai plAy_frame Schoolhouse
An experimental backyard structure to serve as a space for alternative learning, community gathering, and play.
Collaboration with Jackie Stewart Woodcraft in Ojai, CA.
The structure is situated beneath a speckled canopy of Chinese Evergreen Elms and Canyon Oaks, therefore a strategy to dissolve the façade into the landscape was implemented via the Shou Sugi Ban technique of charring the exterior wood. The structure delicately interacts with the ground plane as a low floating deck supports the spatial enclosure. The space itself is open and consists of a split level loft that serves also an exterior balcony while housing a little reading nook below. The loft is accessed via a small ladder and has a portico slide to the lower ground level. The space was designed to allow future additions both to the interior and exterior.
