Suspended Surf Shade

A delicate intervention upon an existing structure.

The aim was to tenderly intervene upon the eastern façade of a Mobile Dwelling to create a structural object will serve as a storage rack to keep surfboards out of the sun. The design needed to be strategically attached in a way that does not interact with the ground plane and could at a later date be detached and utilized elsewhere. Therefore, the methodology needed to be a balance of strategic adaptability, a blend of contextual with space for alternate realities.

The final design was executed as a pre-fabrication of elegant and low profile 3/4” structural steel fastened to the interior studs coupled with a steel tension cable system to prevent deflection of the shade structure as well have the capability to use the horizontal surface for plants and other potentially heavy objects. The surface plane was painted a fun lavender color to add a little spontaneity and pop to the white façade.
