Continuous Handrail

Collaboration with Matthew Edwards Workshop

This project was a series of handrails for local architectural engineering firm in San Luis Obispo. The building renovation was a modern intervention upon an existing masonry building in downtown. The landscaping and hardscaping had been completed and the objective was to design and fabricate code compliant handrails that were both structurally elegant yet minimally interfered with it’s context. The result was design that utilized thick walled 1.25” steel tube that could span over 10’ and change multiple axes without needing vertical supoort. The design was very challenging to functionally articulate as well as meet unforeseen complications with the plumbing details and public right-of-way. This was one of my personal favorite projects because it showcases the structural beauty of steel.
